...so apparently it's been so long since I've written a real post here that someone out there decided to report Cranberry Flags as a 'spam' blog [there are levels of irony in there even *I* hesitate to explore, of course, of course...] -- the fact that I'm still here tells you I made the proper sacrifices to the Blogger Gods and am still at the helm, running the show, Chairman of the Board, the Big Kahuna, the Alpha and Omega...

...err, um, anyhoo: for the benefit of those of you who don't follow me on Twitter (and frankly, what the heck is wrong with you? -- too GOOD fer Twitter or something? Huh? Yeesh!...), the last couple of weeks have had my attention directed toward my oldest dog, Daisy -- who, at the age of ten-something (we're guessing, since she wuz a rescue), decided (for reasons undetermined) to pick a fight with the nasty dog down the street who's chained to their front porch 90% of the time -- she left the encounter with three large bites taken out of her from between her shoulders, leaving a gaping hole 20cm across (according to the clinic report) -- she had two operations to stitch and staple everything back together, plus had to fight off an infection in the wound besides -- and between her age and her borderline-obesity, we were worried aboot her prognosis fer a spell there -- thankfully, the doc says she's fine now, the stitches and staples have all been removed, and she's got a nice long (albeit perfectly healthy-looking) scar as her 'lovely parting gift' -- needless to say (and despite Daisy's *continued* attempts to the contrary [sigh]), the block where that mean ol' chained-up dog lives is now completely OFF-LIMITS fer both our dogs' walking routines...

Not so much unlike someone else whose "inner censor has been working overtime", I'm going to turn something loose on yawl that might be somewhat embarrassing to moi (but hey, it's content, so gather round, buckaroos!) -- it's a letter I wrote [and perhaps unfortunately, got published] sometime around early 2001 to a magazine in response to a question they put to their readership on the subject of the "nearly universal perception of the arts as unimportant" (this wuz, IIRC, not very long after all the public and political brouhahas over Andres Serrano's Piss Christ and Chris Ofili’s [elephant-dung-enhanced] The Holy Virgin Mary, amongst others) -- anyhoo, enjoy [and please be gentle with me in the comments, or I shall run and hide in the tall grasses until the moon turns purple and the trees dance the Bunny Hop...]:

As a musician and composer, my thoughts on the antagonistic relationship between the arts and society are perhaps colored by my perception of the arts as a predominantly shamanistic endeavor. As such, various evolving value-shifts, such as the increasing secularization of American society (particularly as it relates to the ever-overreactive 'separation of church and state' arguments), the increasingly high media profile of science and similar left-brain activities being raised to the level of our new 'opiate of the masses', and the stereotypical bottom-line, business-school mentality of 'productivity über alles', among others, can each be seen as distancing society from valuing and respecting the more Dionysian, right-brain arena of the artist, whose function (not unlike the shaman's) is not so much concerned with the material world, but with those worlds that could be/should be/never were/might have been. In connecting society to those other worlds, artists can set reality in a different light, a light that can illuminate new solutions, new paradigms, and the surprising beauty that exists amid the otherwise numbing grayness of a practical existence. This is the proper function of the arts and the artist, and ought to be valued as such.

As for whether anything can or should be done to change society's current hostility, in the long term, I imagine the present decline in the respect for the arts will turn out to be the inevitable back swing of a long historical pendulum, as most societal trends are. In the short term, however, I'm not overly hopeful about the immediate future of the National Endowment for the Arts (but then, I'm not hopeful about Social Security, either).

Been meaning to write a post updating my poker progress fer *weeks* now, but just never got a round tuit (dernded things are rare, doncha know).

Last I looked, I wuz ranked 870th in cumulative ‘lifetime’ points over on the NLOP (National League of Poker) site –- given that I went back to playing at that site a couple weeks *after* they started keeping track of cumulative poker points, I’m kinda happy with meself ('specially since I wuz 5900-somethingth on the weekly leaderboard the first week I came back -- so I apparently made *some* improvement [grin]...)

(‘Course, I’m even *happier* that a couple of weeks back, I slogged my way thru 700-some folks in one of their week-end championship matches to take *5th* place –- which earned me my first 'non-imaginary' reward of [not cash, sadly, but] a rather-nice-looking leather-bound ‘poker journal’ with lots and lots of nice blank lined pages within -– which I have yet to decide what I’m gonna be using it fer, natch – so far, only idea that comes to mind is using it fer getting autographs from the pros if’n I ever gets meself into the WSOP or a WPT tourney…)

On the other sites, I’m also still just using my ‘play money’ bankroll – but lately I’ve been concentrating mostly on games like HORSE (at Full Tilt), Triple Draw 2-7 (at Ultimate Bet) and something Poker Stars calls the ‘8-Game’: a round of Triple Draw 2-7 followed by a regular 5 rounds of HORSE, then a round of No-Limit Hold’em and a round of Pot-Limit Omaha (and home again, home again, jiggity-jig back to Triple Draw, of course, of course). With enuff patience (and stricter adherence on my part to the Ferguson principles of bankroll management), I should be getting to where my ‘play money’ may yet earn me some *real* money [ah, we can but hope, can’t we?...]

It is our duty to inform you that as of 7:35:05am UTC on September 10, 2008, the Earth has been destroyed.

The destruction of Earth was first reported by Mr Jonathan Barber of Wisconsin, United States, who spotted that his home-made seismic Earth Detector had ceased to give readings at around 8:00am (2am local time). Several other amateur geocide spotters noticed this at the same time but Mr. Barber was the first to place a telephone call to the IEDAB's Geocide Hotline (+44 115 09Ω 4127, ask for Other Dave) at which point IEDAB officials performed an emergency check of their own instrumentation and verified Mr. Barber's report, as well as fixing the exact time of geocide.

Six Unspectacular Quirks About Me:

1. I put my toothpaste on my toothbrush by first measuring out a drab from the tube onto my right ring finger, and then transferring said drab from finger to brush.

2. I hate everything mint-flavored (with the notable exception of dental floss).

3. When putting forks away at home, I separate them into three groups: a) those fer general use; b) those fer feeding pets; and c) those fer scraping out dog dishes. (I am not, however, entirely certain the wife realizes I make this precise categorization.)

4. I did once briefly entertain the thought of having electrolysis in lieu of ever shaving my dernded beard again.

5. I am purposely ending each of these items with a period instead of an ellipsis, *despite* the fact that doing so goes against all my natural tendencies and instincts, and it's getting even more and more difficult with each successive item.

6. I cannot touch the tip of my left thumb to the tip of my left pinky. At all. Right thumb to right pinky, piece of cake. The Chinese astrological cycle begins with the year of the Rat; consequently those born within this category like to be first, pioneers, at the forefront of the action. Because of this, they tend to see themselves as a cut above the others. Restless and inquisitive, those born under the influence of the Rat are active, both physically and mentally, and tend to lead busy lives. Challenge is essential to them for they love the thrill of living dangerously, adapting easily to different environments and surviving against all odds. With clairvoyance, intuition, perspicacity and an eye for detail, Rats are formidable problem solvers, finding workable solutions to the knottiest problems. Travelling is one of their favorite pastimes. They have a natural talent for the arts, specifically writing.

The Rat possesses attributes ranging from charming and humorous to honest and meticulous. The Chinese say those born in these years make good and wise advisors, yet they can never decide for themselves and change direction constantly.

However, Rats at times hunger for power and money, leading some to be gamblers and others to be manipulative or petty. Their greed can lead them into a destructive trap. They should avoid the negative traits of being sly, secretive, critical and judgmental of others. Another problem is that they can worry and fret endlessly, especially about their health, which creates internal stress. To combat this, Rats need space and understanding, love and companionship.

Rats are best known for their charm and intelligence, which often wins admiration wherever they go. Blessed with a sharp wit, they possess a marvelous sense of humor, which makes them stimulating and amusing company to have around. Generally extroverted, they may well be described as opportunists for they prefer to live off their wits rather than labor long and hard to earn their daily bread.

The Rat has a great appetite and appreciates fine cuisine, loving all types of good food, fine wines, baked goods and gourmet meals. Although he may not be patient enough to prepare these great meals himself, he does enjoy dining at all the latest restaurants.

Rats should have a happy childhood and a carefree youth. However, the second part of their lives may be stormy and problematical. They may be prone to lose money in a bad business deal or their happiness in an unfortunate love affair. The third part of their lives will be comfortable, and their old age as peaceful as could be wished.

It is important to note whether the Rat was born in the summer or the winter of the year. In summer the lofts and granaries are full, but in winter the Rat will be obliged to go out and forage for food, and must watch out for the traps set along the way. In human terms, this could mean the risk of prison or an accidental death.

The Passionate Rat

Rats are able to control their feelings and will generally present a cool facade to the outside world, regardless of whatever volcanic emotions they may be feeling inside. But these are passionate creatures whose feelings can be deeply stirred and though able to control them as a rule, when the volcano does erupt, watch out! Perhaps one of their faults is their inability to actually talk about their feelings to those they love, and consequently they tend to repress them -- thus adding to the volcanic pressure. As well as being deeply passionate they are sensual creatures who simply exude sexuality and who greatly enjoy all forms of physical stimulation.

Rats' romantic life is very quiet, provided that they take care not to interact with the Horse or Rooster. In particular, it is catastrophic for a male Rat to marry a female Fire Horse. They should be wary of those born in the Year of the Tiger; although a light social bond may be enjoyable, a deeper relationship may prove problematic. Rats have excellent relationships and much happiness with the Dragon, Monkey and Ox born.

Fer some strange reason, I've been carrying the first few lines of the children's poem Eletelephony around in my head lately, trying to puzzle out just exactly *what* an 'elephone' and 'telephant' might actually be (humor me -- it beats medication...).

Today, I did some Googling and came up with the following:

Then it hit me:

Hunting The White Whale

So since I blew my Round 2 game of the FTP Poker After Dark series, I've played *20* more 1st round qualifiers and placed no better than 23rd in any of them [stews and steams] -- I may yet hafta resort to some arcane form of sorcery to get back into contention [in classic reality-TV voice: "I want this SO BAAADDDD!!!..."]

FTP Poker After Dark Tourney: Round 2

Some of yawl already heard me mention this elsewheres, but on Saturday night, I beat 359 other players in a first-round on-line tourney on Full Tilt Poker where the person who survives all three rounds gets to go on the TV show Poker After Dark and play fer $120,000.

(Yeah, thanx -- I kinda liked it too [grin]...)

However, tonight wuz the 2nd round, and in what has become an irritatingly common occurence fer me in multi-stage tourneys:

Start time: 10:05 PM
Time I lost all my chips: 10:36 PM

...and the most irritating part is I *know* exactly what I did wrong.

I started off expecting most everyone to be playing tight, and I wuz right, with the big exception of the guy immediately to my right, who apparently took that same assumption to the extreme by going all-in the first f****ing *four* hands [sigh] -- after he got busted down to 2 big blinds and then doubled back up twice, though, there were really only three of us at the table playing any hands at all: the guy immediately to my left, the guy on Mr. All-In's right, and me -- after the All-In Fiend settled himself down, I quickly took to stealing pots right and left from all the Nervous Nellies until I wuz both the table chip leader and in something like 116th place overall (out of just slightly less than the 2100-some players who'd started this game [!!!]) -- problem wuz: I fergot that once you get so high up in chips, you make yerself a target if'n yah *don't slow the **** DOWN* (which I didn't, of course, of course [slaps self on forehead]...)

[...and to add insult to injury, once the guy on my left caught me napping fer aboot a third of my chips, *he* started using my own steal techniques against everyone, including *me* (which, given the number of opportunities he had to use them earlier in the game and didn't, makes me wonder if he *just* learned them from me right then and there, or he'd been 'acting stupid' until he had a big enuff stack to 'whomp' us all upside our widdle heads -- geez, and I'd even let him take down a couple of pots from the tightwads before that [doesn't pay to be nice in poker, I know, I know (le sigh...)])]

ADDENDUM: is it just me, or did I just aboot set a new personal record for parenthetical expressions just above? [grin...]

First thing yah might notice is I dropped out of playing at Bodog -- after they ditched their original US servers when they got sued fer copyright infringement (or some such bee's wax), I decided I didn't wanna deal with the headache and heartache. Next thing is how much the Full Tilt and Poker Stars accounts have grown (in case I fergot to mention before, most sites will give you $1,000.00 in play money to start with when you first sign up) -- I've gotten to the point on those two sites now where I figger: if I don't make it to the money at one of the low-limit tables/tourneys ($250 buy-in at Full-Tilt, $300+ at Poker Stars), I must be having a *bad* day -- took it all recently in a 90-person sit-down on Full Tilt (as well as finishing in the top 100 in a couple of their 600-some player tourneys), which came at the end of a otherwise miserable losing weekend last week -- meanwhile, Poker Stars has a 3-stage tourney going on the next few weeks I need to take another stab at, since the final stage gets you at the final table with Negreanu himself [insert perfectly hetero-fanboy swoon hereaboots...]

Now the Ultimate Bet and Party Poker numbers haven't changed much because I've been concentrating on the freeroll tourneys at Ultimate and just playing the minimum buy-in tables ($11) on Party Poker...

HOWEVER...

...tonight I played one of them freeroll tourneys against 4999 other people on Ultimate Bet AND CAME IN 21ST!!! [cue Harold Hill's 76 trombone band, please (grin)...]

Good news: that qualifies me fer a tourney on Sunday where there's $1000 in prize money -- *REAL* money...

Bad news: if I'd made the top 20 tonight, I'da already *had* me some green (well, okay, tonight 20th place wuz $1 and 1st wuz something like $9 -- but I's still looking fer me first *real* money win, so I ain't so picky yet, 'sright?...)

Part of me wants to make an 'eye candy' list of Supergirl, Batgirl, Mary Marvel, etc., but that's not really the point here, is it? [grin]...

Let's start with Darkseid and Thanos -- a villain whose goal is finding the Anti-Life Equation and another who's in love with Death itself; gotta be some good conversation there, doncha think? -- oh, and let's toss in Thanos' brother (and one-time superhero) Starfox fer good measure...

It's a wonderment I haven't spent a fortune in therapy bills just due to some of the more extreme pr0n I've seen in my time (esp. in the days before pop-up blockers -- thanx fer drudging up those repressed memories [grin]) -- however, something a little more pleasant that comes to mind is a site with transgendered superhero fanfiction [NOTE: mature subject matter in those stories -- you been warned, dernded it!...]

5. In a recent post you mentioned something about "giving sermons on the subject of whether or not Jesus had a sex life." Tell me more about that. (Sorry, the Devil made me ask that.)

While I wuz touring with an ecumenical youth ministry (which will remain nameless to protect the innocent -- and the people involved too [grin]), I happened upon a somewhat-radical Christian text (wish I still knew the title) which had an interesting subchapter called something like "Did Jesus Have A Penis -- And If So, Why?" which discussed the idea of Jesus having sex (whether with a partner or 'flying solo', as it were) -- that subchapter wuz only aboot a paragraph in length, but I started elaboratng on it and improvising riffs around it just fer me own giggles (and those of me mates in that crew, which included both a devout Nietzschean [if one can in fact be such a thing] and a guy who wanted to become an Episcopalean priest purely fer the opportunity to spike the communion with LSD -- yes, I hung out with the *hip* crowd, didn't I?), and eventually I had a whole speech up to aboot sermon-length (albeit rather rambly at that size) -- somewhere along the line, we walked into a straightlaced fundamentalist church that *obviously* didn't dig our 'secular humanistic' leanings, and I decided to open up on them with that routine (which I did happily 3 or 4 more times under similar circumstances until 'the band broke up', so to speak...)

...now this is where I's supposed ta give yawl permission to request some questions from me to ask of you (although I make absolutely *no* promises for originality, relevance or appropriateness [PC or otherwise]...)

1. When I Googled the word 'dernded' just now, 28 [EDIT:okay, 26] of the first 30 entries came from things I'd written hither and yon (under various names, of course, of course...)

2. I still have the copy of Marvel Tales #2 from 1965 that my brother and I ripped apart fighting over whose it was (rendering what would now be a $60 comic worth only aboot $6)...

3. If I get particularly nervous, my right arm will begin to look like I've got a bad case of alien hand syndrome...

When I mentioned the fact that I'd twice hacked into the system account of my community college during the interview fer my current job, I neglected to mention that the system password on the first ocassion was the first word in the name of the college, and the second time it was the name of the street where it was located -- 'snot like I had to guess the name of someone's dead son or nuthin'...

I wrote a letter to President Nixon when I wuz 9 or 10 in which (IIRC) I said something to the effect of "I hope Eldridge Cleaver takes off your head with a shotgun" -- I got the standard form letter back... and when I wuz 12, my passport to go to Scandanavia took two monthes longer to process than my mother's (hmmm)...
